Bollywood

I marched in Pride this weekend with a queer South Asian group, and one of the songs we danced to was just so fun and, well, joyful that it won't get out of my head.  It's from a recent Bollywood film called "Om Shanti Om."  Just try to not dance to this.

God, I love this stuff.

Todd Rundgren

"Love of the Common Man"

Nellicious is a TR fan and has turned me on to him.  I ripped a bunch of his stuff from her last week, which explains the previous entry, and this song is my favorite.  It's been in my head ever since.

"It wont take long
To turn your head around
Too late tomorrow
cause everyone needs the love of the common man
Turn the world around
Too late tomorrow"

Rent

I was listening to Todd Rundgren the other day and thinking about how much the music from "Rent" was so obviously inspired by him.  So, I YouTubed some of the "Rent" music, and since then, I've had this tune in my head although it is not one of the Rundgren-esque songs.  One of my favorites from that show, not least because I love Idina Menzel.

Marvin Gaye

I'm listening to Every Greatest Motown Hit of Marvin Gaye (yes, that is the name of the album), so I thought I'd share the love here on earworm.  I'll just start you off with one of my favorites, and you can groove through other tunes on YouTube or iTunes or your CD collection yourself.

God I love this song.

Erykah Badu

"Call Tyrone"

Nellicious sent me links to this summer's concerts this morning, and Erykah Badu is coming. I know some of her stuff, but not much, so I was cruising around on YouTube listening to her this morning.

This song is so fucking awesome.  I played it a bunch of times; then, I went off and listened to some Arrested Development and BBC News, and this song was still in my head, so I had to listen to it some more.

"You better call Tyrone ..."

Wings

Dang, I don't know why, but I woke up with Wings in my head this morning.  I ambled into work in full confidence that my weird music jones would be satisfied since I happen to have a Wings compilation on iTunes.

They are so cheesily 70s, but I have to admit I like them and not even nostalgically.  They're kind of like Beatles Lite, and if I am in the mood for authentic, good pop music, it fits the bill.

Why I am in the mood for pop music is another question entirely and one I'm not currently prepared to answer with care.  Maybe I just need to be light-hearted today.

"Do me a favor
Open the door
Let 'em in"

In my head because I've been listening to Shelby Lynne's new album on repeat in Nellicious' car.  She does nice mellow versions of the Dusty Springfield catalog.

I really love this song.  It's so sweet and the sentiment rings true to me.

Plus, about a million people have covered it, including the Bay City Rollers and Annie Lennox.

However, we must pay homage here at earworm to the initiator, Miss Dusty Springfield, and her super cute (!) little dance moves.

"Oh, look what has happened with just one kiss
I never knew that I could be in love like this
It's crazy but it's true
I only want to be with you"

Alicia Bridges

"I Love the Nightlife"

In my head because it played like three times at Nellicious' this weekend when we were on an organizing jag.

I had the 45 of this fab disco hit when I was in junior high, which means I probably still have it in the basement.  I don't remember the video though.  Nice jumpsuit!  She has a distinct Grace Jones wannabe thing going on.

Do you think she's a dyke?  I kind of think she's a dyke.  Edited to add:  A quick check of Wikipedia indicates that she is.  I mean, it was kind of obvious.

The Lucksmiths

"Guess How Much I Love You"

This is a fun Australian band a student introduced me to several years ago.  Their music is catchy, especially this song.  Sadly, I can't find a good audio of it on the web for my millions of (three) readers.  But, their website is cute and low-tech.  And, they have a MySpace page, of course.

"You know I’m thinking of you
In the bookstore, in the laundromat
Guess how much I love you
Much more, more than that
More than that"

Laura Nyro

"Stoned Soul Picnic"

Lynda Barry
refers to this song in one of her Ernie Pook's Comeek strips.  I think I cut it out of some local paper back in the late 80s and have it in a box in the basement somewhere.

"There'll be trains of blossoms
There'll be trains of music
There'll be trains of trust,
trains of golden dust.
Come along and surry on sweet trains of thought, surry on down
... surry down to a stoned soul picnic"

Nothing to watch, but at least you can hear it:
